Malaysian Students Embark on a Space Adventure

Malaysian Students Embark on a Space Adventure

Buckle up with Sunway International Schools (SIS) and prepare for lift off on an exhilarating adventure into the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) as they bring the Cubesat Challenge to Malaysia for the very first time. Selected as the first Malaysian school to host the revolutionary camp in collaboration with Starlight Education, the Cubesat Challenge is a first-of-its-kind experiential learning space programme that allows students to simulate a satellite mission from design to launch.

Guided by veteran NASA astronaut Charles D. "Sam" Gemar – one of only 600 human beings in the history of the planet with experience orbiting the earth on multiple occasions – along with a team of expert educators comprising accomplished scientists and industry professionals, students ranging from 13 to 17 years old will be given the chance to delve into the intricacies of building miniature satellites. Taking place on 28 and 29 September 2024, it promises to be a brain-stimulating educational experience open to all secondary students nationwide.

“As the first school in Malaysia to host the groundbreaking Cubesat Challenge that has empowered students across the region by igniting a spark of curiosity, the opportunity is most definitely an honour as it also aligns perfectly with SIS’s vision of inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. Beyond that, it reflects the School's commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in STEM education through exceptional educational opportunities,” said SIS Principal, Mr. Richard Cherry.

Gemar shared that regardless of the participants’ backgrounds, curiosity is the most crucial trait as the programme serves as a platform to explore the wonders of space and cultivate a love for STEM.

“By bringing the Cubesat Challenge to Malaysia, the primary goal is not to raise the next class of astronauts, but rather to motivate and empower students to pursue STEM degrees and eventually careers in the field,” Gemar further added on.

Additionally, younger space enthusiasts can participate in the Galactic Explorers programme aimed at equipping them with valuable STEM skills and knowledge alongside vital critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities to boldly navigate the frontiers of space while shaping a more sustainable future.

Tailored specifically to students aged nine to 12 years old, Galactic Explorers combines entertainment and education while also incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in this two-day programme happening on 5 and 6 October 2024. Three-dimensional (3D) design and coding, and rapid prototyping are among the skills that will be taught and applied throughout the process of designing a rocket as well as a parachute mechanism.

Having three Space Shuttle missions under his belt and clocking in over 581 hours in space – with 385 completed orbits around the Earth – Gemar is a former NASA astronaut who will be taking the reins of the sessions, offering his expert guidance and out-of-the-world mentorship.

Whether you are passionate about STEM or simply curious about the wonders of space, this is an experience and launch pad you won't want to miss.
